About This Blog

This blog was designed by myself as one of my assignments for 'Interactive Design' to explore the different concepts, characteristics and themes of Interactive Design. The end result of this assignment is a thorough understanding of the criteria in creating successful websites in order to complete our major assignment for this course. The major assignment consists of creating a 'How to...' website. I began this blog on the 5th of March 2010

Interactive Design

Interactive design, in my own words, is the study of designing devices that one uses for different purposes including business, fun, advertising, education etc. that one can interact with. Interactive design allows one to be apart of the device and control what is done with the device. Devices can include computer design websites, computer software (eg. games), GPS systems, playstation, educational toys, etc. These devices must be researched thoroughly to achieve maximum success. Some questions some designers must ask about their design include:Who is my target audience?
  • What do I want my target audience to achieve?
  • How can I make my design easy to access and use for this audience?
  • What is my design about?
  • What is my theme and how do I incorporate my theme into my ideas?
  • And so on..

Reader Rabbit

One example of a very successful interactive design computer software program is Reader Rabbit. Reader Rabbit is an educational software program that children interact with in order to learn how to spell, how to read, as well as other editions teaching math. According the the website "The Reader Rabbit Software has sold over 6 million copies since 1993 and has won 175 awards and accolades."

Tickle Me Elmo

An example of a non-screen based interactive design is the 'Tickle Me Elmo'. The Tickle Me Elmo is designed for children to listen to, tickle and get a reaction from the toy. The toy has been very popular among the children, especially the 'Tickle Me X-Treme'. The Tickle Me X-Treme is popular as it includes 3 different tickle spots and includes reactions such as shaking, giggling, laying on his stomach, slap the floor, waving arms in the air, uncontrollable rolling, turns on back and kicks legs in the air then stand up again - finishing with a sigh and 'Give Elmo a break please!'. This interactive toy is great for children as they learn touch, sounds and find great entertainment in a moving toy.

Although computer software is very popular for games for education and fun purposes, interactive websites are more widely used around the world, especially the free websites. Examples of these websites include:

1. Turbo Chef

The Turbo Chef is a new type of oven that is designed to have your meal cooked in less time, and with better results. The website is elegantly designed to the target audience being people that love to cook at a mature age (adults). The website allows one to explore the oven in the many different aspects that makes this oven better than others, such as the airspeed technology. The audience can also see the chef, Charlie Trotter creating the food and seeing how it is cooked and the amount of time it would take. The graphics of Charlie are as realistic as watching a cooking show on television, creating a very real feel to the website. Another link found on the page is Charlie Trotter's biography which allows the audience to find out more about the chef featured on the website and the sort of dignified people that use this oven. The website has proven to myself and others I have shown such as my family and fellow design students to have acheived it's goal aboveand beyond expectations.

2. Red Interactive Agency

This website was made by Red Interactive Agency where one can chat with people around the world with total privacy, as well as read up on Red Interactive Agency. One chooses a character from the list of 10, with a somewhat medieval feel, and walk around the small space and chat to people around. After experiencing the website for myself, I found that there were around 5 people on at a time from all countries, not always with the same language that enjoy walking around and chatting to people. It is an enjoyable and somewhat strange experience, but has free advertising which achieved goals above and beyond.
